Story

Courageous is a movie, in summary, written and directed by the Kendrick brothers of Sherwood pictures, the same house that brought “Fireproof”, another very well done faith-based movie.

The movie has the overriding theme of Godly fatherhood and responsible manhood as a whole.
Courageous revolves the lives of 5 men: Adam (Alex Kendrick), Nathan (Ken Bevel), David (Ben Davies), Shane (Kevin Downes) who are police officers in Dougherty County Sheriff's Office in Albany, Georgia and Javier (Robert Amaya) who is a construction worker that by (for lack of a better word) “chance” got a job working for Adam who later helped him get a full time job in which he ended up being promoted in.

When Adam loses his daughter, he begins re-evaluating his performance as a father, a quest that leads him to draft a Resolution of what kind of father he'd like to be to & for his remaining child, a son. And as a way to keep himself accountable, he passes a copy to his 4 friends who end up making the same resolution – to be better fathers.

This set up a resolution signing ceremony in which the movie's punchline lies. After declaring their commitment to the resolution, the presiding minister uttered these words:

“... You may have confidence in this resolution and your resolve now because as you stand here, there's no challenge, no controversy and no conflict. But I can assure you that challenges will arise, conflicts will arise, and controversy will arise. It is at that moment in order to live out this resolution you will need COURAGE!”

It's these challenges, conflicts and controversies that make the movie with some excelling and others failing but eventually, to the audience, the message is passed.

The movie has a great blend of comedy, drama and action. Robert Amaya's character as Javier brings such a refreshing comic relief to the movie. The action in the movie is crowned by great and well executed stunts that unlike most movies across the board – Christian or not - today are not outlandish. The stunts are actually quite believable. And for a Christian movie, that's quite something!

The theme of the movie is by no means subliminal. The theme is well brought out and credit should definitely go to the writers Stephen and Alex Kendrick, who are brothers and the senior and associate pastors at Sherwood Baptist Church, in Albany, Georgia. Alex was, aside from being the lead actor, also the director while Stephen was the producer. Great work by the brothers.

As pointed out earlier, the theme is about Godly fatherhood and responsible manhood as a whole. This point is however only tackled from the father point only. It would have been quite complete if the responsible or godly husband angle was also covered. But if you have watched “Fireproof,” you might argue that the husband angle was covered there which makes sense. “Fireproof” covers the godly husband angle while “Courageous” covers the godly father angle.

Courageous is a must watch! That's the verdict!
